review 1: It's 1978 and a U.S. senator's son has been missing for 10 years. Dr. Siri Paiboun is asked to lead the Lao task force looking for the MIA pilot. The team from Laos must partner with Americans to accomplish their mission. There are hijinks aplenty, including the problems related to the official Lao translator who doesn't speak English. Siri and his hand-picked team get more than they bargained for when someone from the U.S. contingent is found dead in most unsavory circumstances. For Siri, finding the murderer is a bit like Beat the Clock since he's going to die soon, according to his transvestite fortune telling friend.
review 2: Oh my goodness, the series just keeps getting better. Strange as it may seem, the single detail that bothered me the most was ... morethe likelihood of a female US senator visiting Laos in 1978. That's the one thing that makes me want to run to the reference sources and do some research (though I have so far successfully fought the urge). I must say I am happy at the role played by Mr. Geung in this book, and surprised by the fate of the young female interpreter. The competitive behaviour between Phosy and Li (the awkward fellow who once proposed to Dtui) was worth the poetic license of Li's unlikely inclusion in the mission and his subsequent change of character from a pompous, somewhat unlikable person to just a regular guy. Siri's clever exploitation of the weaknesses of Judge Haeng make for some entertaining exchanges. All in all, a satisfying installment in the Dr Siri pantheon. less
