Dr. Siri Paiboun
review 1: This, the sixth book in the Dr. Siri Paiboun compendium, strays a little into darker territory. No longer are we plagued with victims of war or politics; this is the stuff of serious forensics: a serial killer is on the loose in Laos! There is also the distracting problem of what has happened to the man they call "Rajid," the resident Indian madman whom no one has seen for nearly two weeks. Dr. Siri, with the help of all his friends (and then some) saves the day by solving both mysteries before another innocent person dies.
review 2: I have read three of this series of books about a retired revolutionary conscripted to become the Laos' only state coroner in his 70s. I had thought of passing this one on to my daughter-in-law, but the subject matter and the murde
... morers in question are more disturbing than most and I think she would find it upsetting. The end looks like being very dark too, which is not everyone's cup of tea. I did enjoy it, the little vignettes of life in post-revolutionary Laos, the characters, the way society runs, are all as fascinating as usual. Not my favourite of the set, but still a cracking good read if you are not over-sensitive to the subject matter. less

I do love this series. Not too heavy, a good dollop of humour, and wonderful characters.

So much history so imaginatively told.
