review 1: I was pretty disappointed by this book. At the beginning, it was promising. I liked the heroine and it seemed like it would be a fun book. It devolved pretty quickly, however. The writing is extremely repetitive. I feel like I read the words "S***kickers", "baby", "the female", and a few others at least three times per page. You also read about fifty variants of "Bastian felt guilty for being so dishonest with the female, but he just couldn't help himself." Aside from this being so repetitive, his total failure to be honest and honorable made him unlikeable to me. And then, of course, the heroine eventually finds out what he's been keeping from her and she freaks out. That was understandable, but then it quickly turns into her blaming and hating herself for freaki... moreng out. She decides she should have been more understanding, despite his promising he is being completely honest with her while continuing to hide from her the fact that he wants to get her pregnant, without including her in that decision, with a child which will probably kill her on the way out. By the end of the book I didn't like or respect either of these characters. I also disliked that the book is told in multiple POV, but all the characters have the same voice. That is not good storytelling. I also didn't feel like the relationship between the hero and heroine was well-developed. We don't see them talking much or see them bonding over experiences and time spent together. It's basically just they meet and are instantaneously "in love" and cannot stay away from each other and have no decision in their relationship. I felt like neither the characters nor their relationship evolved through this book. I don't plan to read the rest of this series.
review 2: This is a good start to the series. I think the dragonkind was a great concept. The characters were interesting however Myst seemed very judgemental. I'm glad she got her stuff together and realized that Bastian wasn't trying to control her or lie either. Bastian is the leader and knows he has responsibility to his race and to procreate. I felt bad for them because they couldn't have companion ship just one night stands which are unfulfilling. I can't wait to keep going. less
