review 1: i'm pretty sure i've read some of this author's other offerings in this series and liked them reasonably well. the fact that i can't remember a more specific impression means i didn't love 'em or hate 'em. however, i made myself finish this book. i detested this heroine. the characters were literally cardboard cutouts...saint, total ahole, no in between, etc. everything was gut wrenching, she's the "strongest" person everyone knows but she's always falling apart in ridiculous ways, everyone is so careless. i found it impossible to believe that anyone with a lick of sense would have anything to do with this woman, let alone become her bosom friend in the span of a couple of pages. really pretty terrible.
review 2: Kind of torn on this one. One of the things I e
... morenjoyed most about the previous Madeline Dare books was her supportive husband and lack of relationship drama -- a nice break from other crime books/TV shows where female protagonists always have messy love lives. Dean and Madeline's relationship becomes more central in this one and not in a good way. The crime element also seemed to be resolved a bit too quickly. That said, Read is in her element here -- wise-cracking Madeline is great as an overwhelmed mom of twins and her new fire investigator friend Mimi is awesome -- Read writes wonderful kick-ass female characters. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next book -- but like a younger, foul-mouthed Jessica Fletcher, wherever Madeline goes, murder is sure to follow. less

This started out a little slowly but picked up and became very good on several levels.

Good story line for the most part but I feel like a few things were left unexplained

Not nearly as good as her first three books. I was really disappointed.
