review 1: This was cute, well written, and beautifully drawn. A refreshing POV and a good adaptation of a short story. Grounded without being depressing and fun without being unrealistic (edit: it does deal with the global race/economic issues pretty lightly but not patronizingly so, I think it's actually a good fit for a teen reader focusing on developing empathy as a basis for further understanding, a lot of adult readers who are looking for a scathing critique of global capitalism will feel, well, short changed, and I think some of the negative reviews illustrate this). I would give this to any teen geek girl or anyone who was one or cares about one.
review 2: If only real life mirrored Anda's online identity. While she flounders socially at her school and feels like
... moresomething of a misfit, when she's playing Coarsegold Online, Anda is strong, fearless, and valued. After she starts playing for points and money, which is forbidden by the game's rules, she ends up getting to know a player in China and encourages him to rebel, and comes to realize that right and wrong is more complicated than she had thought. I really enjoyed how the lines between Anda's daily life and her online existence began to blur, and she brought part of her online persona back into her real world. Online gamers will enjoy this one, especially because it features such a kick-ass, true-to-life heroine. less
