review 1: Another example of why I need to start noting why I put something on my wishlist (source of recommendation, book club, random search, etc.) By the time I get books I don't always remember the context in which I thought it would be a good read. This wasn't a bad story, but I don't think I've ever read a book that was so completely different than the way it's described on the back of the book.
review 2: I saw this slim thing waiting to be re-shelved in the "New" section when I worked at the library yesterday. I almost didn't grab it. I'm always grabbing a stack of books when I already have stacks and stacks at home that are waiting to be read... but after my shift I just peeked at a few things real quick like and somehow ended up with four books in my bag. If I w
... moreas getting those four I might as well grab the Doctorow book too, right? It was just a short one and I might actually read it, right? So, I ducked into the back and grabbed it off the cart.I'm glad I did. The novella was fast-paced story of a future where progress for the sake of progress doesn't work out too well, but trying to return to the past, to simpler times, doesn't really work too well either. It's an intriguing and and sort of sad, protracted coming-of-age story with an ending that I found both unsatisfying (in a very satisfying way) and inevitable.I love Doctorow for the ideas that spill out of his fast-paced writing. It's just a story; he's just telling a story, but there's so many kernels of thought popping up and out of the pages. He seems to use his writing to open up one end of a conversation. I always leave his writing feeling ready to write and bits of the story and the characters always tumble around in my brain for days or months after I've closed the book.In addition to the novella that is the meat of this volume, there's a transcript of a talk Doctorow gave in 2010, Creativity vs. Copyright, and an interview with him. It's a nice mix of fiction and nonfiction and a great introduction to Cory Doctorow if you need one. And, at only 136 pages, it's a quick read that's easy to squeeze into even a busy schedule. Lots of typos, however--that drove me a little bonkers. less

I liked the short story, but the speech on copyright and creativity is what peaked my interest.

Excellent. Essentially a novella. Lots of ideas, well paced, interesting sci fi story.

It felt like a short story that should have been a novel.

We don't have progress anymore: we have change.
