review 1: This is a fascinating concept for a book. The infamous story of the first atomic bomb is imagined with a different series of events. How would things have changed Enola Gay had crashed before the fatal flight or if the man responsible for dropping the bomb had gotten cold feet.Robinson's way of looking at alternate histories is a way of shining the light on human nature and on inertia of decisions. As a piece of fiction is was well written and interesting. As something that is designed to encourage thought, it shines.
review 2: Every time I read SF, I'm impressed by how the unique-ness of setting and plot underscores the meaning of the work as a whole. "The Lucky Strike" is a revision of U.S and Japanese history, specifically during WWII. It poses the question:
... more "What if we hadn't dropped the bomb?" And the answer Robinson leads the reader to is an emphatic rejection of the actions of the U.S. The fact that this is alternate history underscores how terrible our reality is.It's a tale of one man's heroism in sacrificing himself to protect the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. Though I agreed with Robinson's sentiment prior to reading his short story, I would say that the message is poignant and well delivered. I learned, as I do every time this happens, how powerful SF can be, despite its critics. less
