review 1: I enjoyed the book, except for the last 40 or so pages. Kate and her husband had until then seemed to be quite reasonable people but because of the Hank incident they both went nuts. How can the only thinkable solution be to complicate their lives by breaking up from where they live, move away from their friends and family and have the child? For god’s sake, do an abortion, keep your mouth shut and continue with your life. Don’t make life more complicated than it needs to be. And, if your wife ONE TIME has an affair and is stupid enough to tell you, get over it. Jeez.
review 2: I really enjoyed the first half of this book. I was riveted, and then...gradually I found the narrator/main character to be increasingly unlikeable and unsympathetic. I sincerely wo
... morender if the author's intention was that we would hate this woman by the end of the book, because I certainly did.I found her attitude, and frankly, her shame about her father and Violet to be untenable. She was willing to go $15000 into debt to hire a publicist because she didn't want Violet to embarrass her? Throughout the second half of the book she makes one ridiculous decision after another with little explanation. She walks away from graduate school in Chicago because the mother she never was close to died? She leaves her boyfriend to move home with her father, even though he doesn't ask her to and doesn't seem to want her to?She tries to call off her $20,000 destination wedding because a child is missing in St. Louis? She "destroys" her ESP (by burning a sheet of notebook paper?????) instead of seeking treatment for what is clearly a raging case of post partum anxiety? She's terrified of an earthquake happening while her husband is at a conference in Denver, but rather than doing the sensible thing and going with him (as he asks her to) to Denver, she stays home because traveling with small children is inconvenient? (I would think being stuck alone in a city ravaged by an earthquake would be more inconvenient?)She has unprotected sex with her best friend and then fails to seek out a morning after pill? (How could Hank, a Harvard educated man, fail to ask if she was on the pill? She notes that she lets Hank touch her breasts, something she hasn't allowed her husband to do in two and a half years, because it was too confusing for her? (I've been a nursing mom, and I was blown away by the absurdity of that one sentence. I cannot wrap my head around this point of view - she can't distinguish between eroticism and motherhood?)Then, absurdly, after the spectacular triple failure of 1.cheating on her husband with her best friend and 2. Not using any form of birth control and 3. Not finding a morning after pill and 4. Deciding not to confess this to her husband she, incredibly, upon discovering her pregnancy decides not to terminate because that would make her feel like a hypocrite? And then she lied to the biological father of the child, a man grieving the loss of his wife's pregnancy??? What planet is this woman living on?At the end I resented anti choice, anti working mom asshattery of this neurotic, controlling, anxiety riddled character. I don't know what to make of this - a story crafted by an author who is a gifted story teller - while I hated Daisy/Kate by the end, I was still impressed by the author's style, I just found myself wishing she was telling a different story. less

This book started off really well. The first 25% I enjoyed, in spite of the laborious descriptions of how hard it is to be a mom of two kids. I got very tired of the kid emphasis, but I found the writing engaging and I liked the relationship between the twins. The book went downhill quickly from there. Any woman who would give away the entirety of her and her husband's life savings for basically no reason is an irresponsible jerk. Especially since she's not even working. My dislike for Kate increased tremendously at that point. And Vi, also not likeable. Annoying, selfish. When Kate sleeps with her friend and gets pregnant it didn't ring true even remotely. She's friends with this guy for years, she has two kids, has a good husband who supports her and she hops in bed with her friend? No. No, no, no. She's a jerk.

This story jumps around a lot from past to present, which can be kind of confusing, but I still liked it quite a lot....until the last 100 pages or so. I was really disappointed with Kate's poor judgment near the end. This could have easily been a 5 star book for me if things had happened a little differently. Sadly, it ended with way too many loose ends and a plot twist that I just didn't like. I did have a hard time putting it down though, so I'd definitely like to try more of this author's work.
