review 1: I didn't love this. It's filled with really graphic stuff - a lot of violence, sexual and otherwise, against women and children - and I had a hard time listening to it. It's possible that it would have been less jarring in print, rather than audio, but I had to really force myself through some of the graphic scenes. The author narrates this herself, and for the most part it was good, but at times, her narration was way too earnest in places that didn't make sense. Overall, I had mixed feelings about it and it evens out in the wash to a so-so result.
review 2: For me, "Ruby" falls into the category of winner of Pulitzer Prize. This novel is a must read like "beloved" and "The Color Purple." Without question, you will cry, laugh and root for "Ruby" and "Ephram."
... moreI would be surprised if Oprah didn't purchase the rights and produce a motion picture. If you ever wonder if evil triumphs over good, as I do, "Ruby" will give you hope to hold on to when your days and nights are as dark and filled with sorrow similar to some of the characters in this unforgettable masterpiece. I hated reading the last page. I would spend the rest of my days reading about the love one man had for a woman who finally rejected the lies of weak, sick and disurbed men. less

Beautiful writing, descriptions jump off of the page. Reminiscent of Toni Morrison's Beloved.
