review 1: Eunice has a horrible mother who is too selfish to see her own daughter grow into a woman. When a storm forces Eunice to make a survival decision, all bets are off. Eunice learns the meaning of caring for someone else and is cherished by surrogate mother also known as a wild woman. A fire then forces her to move again into foster care but Eunice decides to take her own path into the arms of the local loner who shows her a love eternal. A little slow, this story is one of awakening to possibilities.
review 2: A perfect book that has it all. Kushner delivers to the reader the most unforgettable characters since Auntie Mame and Holden Caufield. You love them, laugh at and with them, and ache for their tribulations. The author's skill as a poet is evident. The canv... moreas is large and beautifully drawn, and the language is picture-perfect. The plot carries you along at a non-stop page turning pace, such that I could not put the book down until I finished in one sitting. The book is about love, in all its crazy, mixed up, and wonderful manifestations. It is the transformative power of all the "conditions of love" that allow the hero, Eunice, to survive and thrive. She has stolen my heart, as she will yours. This should be the next book you read. You will not be disappointed. Five stars from me. less
