review 1: This book is recommended for ages 6-10 years old. The students of Ella Mentry School are having career day. A newspaper reporter, Mrs. Lilly shows up to career day late. When she arrives, the third graders are interested in starting a school newspaper. Mrs. Lilly pairs AJ and Andrea to report on teacher secrets, but AJ and Andrea lie about their teachers to make juicy headlines. Will AJ and Andrea (and the rest of the third graders) learn their lesson, or will the teachers pay for all the lies written about them? Some discussion questions to use could be for writing prompts:1) When Andrea read her paper proudly about how much she loved Ella Mentry School, Mrs. Lilly said it was terrible. Was there ever something you were proud about that someone told you it was terri... moreble? How did that make you feel? Since then, has it made you better because of it, or has it made you dislike it?2) When the students started to interview Mr. Klutz about how he became bald, how did it make you feel when Mrs. Lilly told the students to stretch the truth about what the headline should be? Have you ever told someone something personal and they told other people about what you said, or something about you that wasn't true?3) In the beginning of the book Andrea keeps saying that they shouldn't write mean things about the teachers, but Mrs. Lilly insists on juicy headlines for the newspaper. Do you think that Mrs. Lilly is an adult who follows the Golden Rule of how to treat others? How did Mrs. Lilly change Andrea's views on writing headlines?4) How did the teachers get back at the students for spreading lies about them? How did the students react to it? Do you think the students of Ella Mentry learned their lesson? 5) If our school had a school newspaper, what types of things would you write about? Would you make up lies to get people interested in reading it, or would you just write the facts? Gutman, D. (2011). Mrs. Lilly is Silly! (Vol. 3). New York, NY: HarperCollins
review 2: Another fun read from the My Weirder School series. Mrs. Lilly, a local reporter, is teacher A.J. and his classmates about eyeball grabbing articles and how to get the scoop. This would be a good book for teachers to share with their students when talking about Freedom of the Press. Possible also when describing the word "Slander." This was not my favorite book from this series but young readers will love it all the same. less
