review 1: The Death-Ray has a fascinating layout and story progression. It feels very experimental to me. I enjoyed the characters, how gritty and nasty and realistic they acted. Drawn & Quarterly has done a wonderful job on the binding and layout. Clowes illustration work and colouring give it a nostalgic feel. This book, if anything, is a piece of art. My only qualm is that, though I appreciated the experimental attempt at the plot, it created a rather confusing and disjointed read. This is not a book I would easily recommend. But for those who are looking for something a bit different, it's worth a look.
review 2: I was pleasantly surprised by this book, in part because, for me, the work of Daniel Clowes generally falls into one of two categories: (1) very well writte
... moren-and-illustrated coming-of-age stories (Ghost World, Wilson, Mr. Wonderful) or (2) surrealist fiction (Velvet Glove Cast in Iron, David Boring). This book is a little bit of both. Like most of Clowes work, it is quite thought-provoking, but what I like about this particular story is that its subject matter - superheroes and superpowers - are comic book staples, the kind of stuff that likely interested the author as a child and continues to interest a substantial portion of his fan base. My feeling is that the themes in this story come from a very deep place.4.5 stars. A close second-favorite to Ghost World. less

Quick read. Not a super-substantial story, but well told. Pretty sad. Not much else to say!
