review 1: A father walks out on his family to become a writer and his 3 very different sons grow up. An overweight priest who struggles with his faith and a Rubiks cube, a talented art forger who rewrites art history, and a paranoid financier who tries to cope with failure. Contemporary modern preoccupations, for fans of Paul Auster or Thomas McCarthy. Cleverly interleaved narratives, with plenty of ideas, and subtle, detailed descriptions of imaginary novels and paintings, although a slightly tepid ending, for me at least.
review 2: I give this book 5 stars for a number of reasons. It is wonderfully written (there must be credit to the translator here, too), cleverly structured and has great characters (even if they aren't really all that pleasant). Plus, it leaves enou
... moregh loose ends to keep you thinking about it for quite some time after you finish it: I love books that don't feel the need to explain everything.I used to think I struggled with books where none of the characters was "good". But then I realised that it was actually when I didn't care about any of the characters. In this book, there aren't really any "goodies" and the central four characters are all weak in their own ways. But they are excellently written and I found that I did care about them.No spoilers, but it is a clever story that centres around a repetition of a day seen from three brothers' viewpoints. There's a lead in and a follow up. And there's a lot more besides. less
