review 1: Unsurprisingly excellent. I am just nutty over Daniel Woodrell--I have had a hard time getting a hold of some of his work, again due I think to my location so I was thrilled when the boyfriend found this for me online. A great deal like Woodrell's other fiction, dealing with poverty and often in a rural setting and very twisted-he's very good at the "knife you know is coming but you are still really scared type twist"--this is especially effective in the short story format. I have to say, I usually enjoy short stories even more than novels, but in this case I do prefer Woodrell's novels. That is being nit-picky though--I just enjoy his work in general.
review 2: I find Woodrell incredibly inspiring, original, and inventive - - - but I didn't really care for
... more this book. I think it may be a 'me' thing more than a "Outlaw Album' thing, but I didn't care for this (or any) collection of short stories that I've ever read. They always seem top brief and rushed or too... Too much like a writing exercise? I always feel like the author's playing with a prompt or purposefully spinning some sort of creative dial and changing up the subject or style on a forced whim instead of what really, truly calls to their instincts as a writer. I guess I just prefer my stories to take their time and nearly all of these brief little snippets were over and done with before I could decide whether or not I cared. Too much went by far too quickly, and that may or may not be just a matter of my own shortcomings of a reader. Too each their own, I suppose. less

Keine Wertung. Den zwölf Kurzgeschichten selbst hätte ich zwischen einem und vier Sternen gegeben.

Raymond Carver meets Flannery O'Connor meets tales from the crypt. That's sounds about right.

One of the best things I have ever read. Great stories, amazing writing, pure delight.

He's just so good. Only wish some of the stories were full novels.

These are great country noir short stories.
