review 1: In the right state of mind, and at the right time, I might have loved this collection of short stories. But I don't think I'm in a place to appreciate cerebral. And that is what this is. Woodrell has some seriously crazy writing skills...lyrical and smart and cerebral. I was impressed from page one. But I've been distracted and intellectually turned to the "off" position, so many of these stories, while beautiful, did not add up. When I read the inside flap after I'd finished the book, I couldn't even completely figure out which stories the synopsis was talking about. So obviously I missed the point. You really need to be tuned in to understand this dark, murky stories that get to the point from a wandering, vague route. And these stories ARE dark...if you have se... moreen the movie "Winter's Bone" (Woodrell wrote that novel) then you will know what I mean. This is not what I would consider fun reading at all. But to be dissected in a college literature course? Perfect.
review 2: Okay, so... I never thought I would read a book of short stories about murderers, rapists, thieves, and/or the victims who are seeking revenge on their murderers, rapists, and thieves, let alone ENJOY said book, but I did and... I did. I don't even know, man. I don't even KNOW. Most of it was kind of disturbing, but it was oddly compelling at the same time. There were a few images that I really didn't need stuck in my head forever, but mostly... yeah, I enjoyed it. Weird! less

Awada
Some stories were good, while others were undeveloped. Woodrell is better at novel length, it seems.
