review 1: I found this trilogy challenging. I read it in fits and starts over about 15 months. It was very violent, especially the first 2 parts (novellas?). The last was the most satisfying, possibly because there was more believable character development. The writing was excellent throughout, as I expected from Woodrell. The grittiness lightened a bit, especially with the last part, definitely my favorite of the trilogy. Now I wonder what happened next to my buddies in St. Bruno. RIP, Mr. Woodrell, you left a respectable body of work.
review 2: The Ones You Do is the last of the trilogy, and centres round John X Shade, father of the Shade brothers and his flight back to St Bruno with his young daughter, pursued by the killer Lunch Pumphrey. More relationahip orientated
... more, with less action, it's a melancholy tale of a life heading to a messy ending and the effects of that life on his family. Different to the first two, but equally stark in it's portrayal of a man whose past choices finally catch up with him. less

The description of details and the dialogue is enough to keep you reading.

Early Woodrell. Not quite as tight as the later work.

It was just okay.
