review 1: Mention conspiracy thriller novels and the first name that comes to mind is Dan Brown - so much so, in fact, that you cannot be taken seriously as an author in the genre unless your book is compared to his somewhere in the back-page reviews. Unfortunately, in this instance, there can be no comparison.Though Trussoni invites us to think outside the box in the same way as Brown, the subject matter is wholly less convincing. Neither Sister Evangeline (oh, what a perfectly droll name for the protagonist, who turns out to be - gasp - part-angel) nor Verlaine invoke the same level of interest, concern or empathy as Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu in The Da Vinci Code, and the “bad guys” are so painfully obvious that I wondered how they had survived long enough to become a cr... moreedible threat to the protagonists in the first place - all that was missing was a twirlable moustache and a white Persian on their lap.The issue with Angelology is that it tries to be something it’s not. It wants so desperately to be liked by the big boys of the schoolyard that like an indulgent mother, Trussoni dresses it up with a secret cult, a mythical object that needs to be kept out of the wrong hands and even a dash of romantic tension, and expects that to be enough to hide the pimples and the too-short trousers. Sadly, there are just too many loose ends, too many unanswered questions, too many superfluous words - it makes the plot feel both slapdash and lethargic at the same time. Without any real resolution, Trussoni drags us to the last page and an ending which is so hopelessly optimistic in its desire for a sequel that you almost feel pity - the first time in the book’s 641 pages.I don’t often advocate movie adaptations, but with Angelology there really is no danger that anything important will be cut from the final offering.
review 2: (3.5 stars) I'm not sure how to rate this book. Overall, I enjoyed the plot, as it was somewhat unique. But it was slow. Only near the last one-third of the novel did things begin to pick up & really keep my interest. There were a few rough transitions that I felt could've been smoothed out. Evangeline, more or less the main character, seemed flat, largely ignorant, & often just unremarkable. The storyline, while enjoyable in that it attempted to bring in some historical fiction of sorts, became less so with its fantasy-like components, as I didn't feel they mixed together as well as they could have. I can't seem to exactly pinpoint what annoyed me about this novel and I'm not sure that I'll move on to its sequel, as originally planned, especially given the lukewarm reviews that I've read. less
