review 1: This book was great in theory, but not so in execution. I agree that it would have made a more compelling piece in Time, as in book form, it was entirely too long and drawn out. I found the author's explanation rather simplistic. Additionally, I found it odd that they did not really flesh out why their theory was better or different than the other theories out there--it's fine to critique, but you need to back it up with specific examples. I ended up not being able to finish it, as I found every chapter to be kind of the same. If you want a great book about poverty and failed nations, I suggest Poor Economics--I am only part of the way through it, but already I feel that it does a more thorough job of tackling this issue than Why Nations Fail does.
review 2: A
... moresimple set of ideas compellingly explains the wide divergence of prosperity in different countries today: institutions. This book got me interested in world history again by explaining it through an economic lens, and it will shape my thoughts as I travel the world because it explains so much of why certain countries have prospered so much in the past 200 years while others have not. Really interesting book. less
