review 1: This book is a prime example why I love book Club !! Would never have picked this book to read had it not been a book club selection. Although I struggled with the Russian language , this is an excellent book. After reading this I definitely will look for more information on the Chernobyl disaster. Well written- would recommend to all- don't be discouraged by the slow beginning- power through to the meat of the story- you won't be sorry.
review 2: I found this book not to be an easy read. The story takes place in Russia ( Soviet Union). The story shows the human side of events beginning with Chernobyl , then Afghanistan, and the final collapse of the USSA. There were lots of characters to keep up with and , to me, it didn't flow smoothly. However, it was an i
... morenteresting and insightful look into these characters and this time period in USSR history. I thought it was a great title for the book- bodies, societies, countries as we know it, don't last forever. less

Loved this book, although it was heartbreaking at times. Would make a great book club selection.
