Atomic Blonde: Film Review

(L to R) TOBY JONES as Eric Gray, JOHN GOODMAN as Emmett Kurzfeld and Oscar® winner CHARLIZE THERON as Lorraine Broughton in “Atomic Blonde.” Theron explodes into summer in a breakneck action-thriller that follows MI6’s most lethal assassin through a ticking time bomb of a city simmering with revolution and double-crossing hives of traitors.

The year is 1989 and the Berlin Wall is about to come down. Tensions are high on all fronts and in steps Charlize Theron to straighten things out. (sort of) Opening this weekend is “Atomic Blonde” directed by David Leitch and it is based on the graphic novel “The Coldest City” written by Antony Jonston. You may remember David Leitch from such films as John Wick and now the Deadpool sequel but he was an accomplished stuntman and stunt coordinator for films like Fight Club and V for Vendetta. He has a unique eye for these types of films and his fresh vision paid off ten fold with John Wick and after watching Atomic Blonde you should be leaving the theater with a nice grin on your face.

Atomic Blonde is an in your face spy thriller that is full of intense action coupled with an outdated story of multiple sides trying to recuperate a so called special list that will reveal the true identities of spies everywhere. My question is why do they keep making these lists? Hello!!! Either way that being said it provides excellent entertainment at the movies. The film lead Lorraine Broughton played by the super talented bad ass Charlize Theron brings this film to life from the moment she comes on screen. The story takes a handful of twists and turns from beginning to end to bump up its wow factor but it could have done without them. Using the fall of the Berlin Wall gives Atomic Blonde a good backdrop to all that is going on screen and additional value with the story being presented. To further beef up the film lets add one hell of a soundtrack! Seeing a spectacular fight scene to the tune of a George Michael song is just perfection. You will understand once you see what I am talking about. The entire movie is one giant 80’s mix mixed in with pure ass kicking action scenes that will have you cringing and wanting more.

Oscar® winner CHARLIZE THERON.

Rounding out the cast of Atomic Blonde is James McAvoy, John Goodman, Eddie Marsan, Tobey Jones and Sofia Boutella. All play their roles well and shine when they have too. We won’t reveal much more because that will spoil the movie. The action scenes and fast pace together with the music will make Atomic Blonde a winner this weekend at the movies. The energy Charlize Theron brings on screen is phenomenal and mixed in with her ass kicking ways and no hold barred attitude makes you love her even more.

The summer movie season has been luke warm for in the Hollywood tentpole department with their mega franchises and sequels so it is nice to seem some new material at the movies where there is no huge cinematic universe that we are dealing with. There is a time and a place for that, there is also a thing called overkill. Atomic Blonde is sexy stylish film and good way to end the month of July at the movies. Getting your ass kicked by Charlize Theron. Please sir, may I have another!

Oscar® winner Charlize Theron explodes into summer in Atomic Blonde, a breakneck action-thriller that follows MI6’s most lethal assassin through a ticking time bomb of a city simmering with revolution and double-crossing hives of traitors.

The crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.

A blistering blend of sleek action, gritty sexuality and dazzling style, Atomic Blonde is directed by David Leitch (John Wick, upcoming Deadpool 2). Also starring John Goodman, Til Schweiger, Eddie Marsan, Sofia Boutella and Toby Jones, the film is based on the Oni Press graphic novel series“The Coldest City,” by Antony Johnston & illustrator Sam Hart. Kurt Johnstad (300) wrote the screenplay. Advertisements Share this:
