review 1: Darynda Jones wrote this? Color me shocked. And no, I'm not being sarcastic. The witty, funny, cracked up, irrepressible Charley that delights me in spite of myself in the Charley Davidson series is morphed into a weak, whiny, angsty, dumb teenager in this version. I'm actually not sure why the behavior that I guess I can overlook in the adult series really bothered me in this book. There was also a lot of absolutely ridiculous male posturing from two "teenagers" that wasn't funny after the first five seconds and resembled nothing so much as a pair of puffed up roosters strutting and squawking before, in a flurry of feathers, beaks and claws, they fight to the death. The plot was both transparent and vague; I'm still not exactly sure what happened although I saw the ... moreending coming a MILE away. The characterization in general was ridiculous.Positive points? Well, the dreaded love-triangle I was expecting was neutralized swiftly, and I guess "Jared" was a little reminiscent of Reyes, whom I can't help but love no matter what nonsense Ms. Jones writes for Charley to say/do. And despite my general eye-rolling at this book I did read to the end, with even a little mild curiosity as to what happens next. So there's that.I don't really think this book is all that great though, and I feel a little ashamed of myself for giving it even two stars. Perhaps Ms. Jones would be better off sticking to the adult-end of the paranormal sleuth spectrum.
review 2: I would like to start by saying I'm a HUGE Darynda Jones fan. I love they way she writes and her Charley Davidson series is one of my favourites, which I re-read regularly. With that said - This series is basically a watered down YA version of the Charley Davidson series, with a slightly less awesome heroine.I think if Darynda had written under a pseudonym to enter the YA genre, this would probably have hit its mark with teens the world over. Unfortunately the readers who love her cheeky wit, and steamy scenes were the ones who ran to their local book store, (or ebook store) to pick this up, and as such are doomed for disappointment. But don't despair! The 6th Charley book comes out in a week. less

Debating between a 3 and 4 stars. Not sure I'm a fan of the insta-love.
