review 1: I got this out of the library because I thought my father told me he loved it so much he's already read it twice; after about 20 pages I called to verify because I was feeling nauseated and apparently he was talking about _Big Trouble_. I almost always finish a book once I've started it, but I'm putting this one down--it reminds me of _The Hangover_, a movie that a friend insisted I see because "it's hilarious" but I found it to be outlandishly stupid. I'd say more but I am done wasting my time on this novel.
review 2: Dave Barry set a high bar for himself when he wrote Big Trouble. That's one of the wackiest novels I've read which isn't trying too hard to be weird, but at the same time is appealing to a lot of less-weird folks. With regret - because I love
... more Big Trouble - the best I can say about Insane City is it made me laugh out loud a handful of times, and that wasn't enough to counteract the straightforward plot and writing which seemed too easy, too designed I not to engage above a certain level of intelligence. That works for the mass audience of a daily paper, but I expect more care to be taken getting a novel to feel like a good long yarn, rather than a hyperextended column. I'm not sorry I read it, but I am disappointed a capable and talented writer couldn't manage a better effort. less

This was definitely insane. Insanely comical! Insanely outrageous! Must, must read!!!

Fast-paced and laugh-out-loud funny. Did I mention there is an orangutan?
