review 1: Dave Eggers fills The Circle with shallow characters and bland dialog, and I know that Eggers can dive much deeper. So I tell myself that the characters and their words simply mirror the shallow world they inhabit--that Eggers is doing this very purposefully. The premise that drives the novel--our seduction by Silicon Valley behemoths, big data, social media and crowd-whatevering--is developed very efficiently by Eggers. The rapid unfolding of the plot combined with the shallow characters makes this novel feel more like a lesson or parable. It's certainly a depressing view of a not-too-distant future. I must admit that I was at first put off by the novel, thinking "Eggers can do better than this." But if I get into a "the medium is the message" mode, then the book sticks w... moreith me as an evocation of the future it depicts. Congratulations, Mr. Eggers...I think. April 2014
review 2: A great reminder of why it has been bad for the planet that Google has taken over instead of Microsoft. [Full disclosure: I work for Microsoft.] Seriously though, interesting idea, but I felt it was poorly executed. More of a screed than a novel, it portrays the kind of privacy-less world that too many people seem happy to be moving towards. I agree with the author that this is a disaster and even appreciate how he showed it can happen from the best of intentions, but the book neither moved me as a piece of fiction nor made me think it would convince anyone in the real-world. Either of which would have been acceptable. less
