review 1: Well, I must say, you should probably read David B's Epileptic first before anything else because it's such a personal exploration of a boy growing up in France with a brother who has epileptic seizures. It's more extensive and somehow more imaginative. The dreams are also very creative and abstract and make sense in the way dreams can only make sense. It was fascinating to see into David B's mind knowing his autobiographical history. There are a great many allusions to dreams in Epileptic but to have them as the center of the topic was quite different and unique. The drawings, as ever, are fantastic but what's more to love is the baring all of one's subconscious soul. I feel like this novel will grow on me like a fine record does and I will come back to it more and m... moreore as my life continues on.
review 2: I read this last night (it's only about 180 pages), and while I can see why there is a general distaste for this book (there's some images within that I imagine some readers just don't think should be drawn...), I thought overall it covered the dream cycle fairly well. Not brilliantly, but in an adequate enough way that I wasn't left totally unfulfilled. I think David B. does a pretty good job taking us to his dreamscape, and involving the reader in the very haunting, helpless, nonsensical and curiously linear process that we all experience when we dream. Concerning graphic novels, you could do a lot better than this ("Stitches" and "Blankets"), but you also could do a lot worse ("Driven by Lemons", "It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken", and "Monologues For Calculating the Density of Black Holes" come to mind). less
