review 1: No one should EVER make this book into a movie. I swear, I don't know what I'll do if someone tries. It would be total rubbish and completely dishonor the power of this incredible novel. This book should come with an NC-17 rating. Honestly. I have never read anything that had such cursing in it-- f-bombs were dropped regularly, s#@t came up quite a bit, as well as several other hearty swears.I have also never read a book that was so graphically violent. There is also a lot of sadistic violence. There were times when I felt nauseous because of the descriptions and set-ups of violent acts. The book was so dark and disturbing and seemed so helpless that when I got to the last couple of discs, I brought them in from the car because I could no longer take another few days of the... more book. I had to know how it ended because I knew there had to be some kind of positive event near the end of the book because the total horror of what was happening could not be the way it would all end. I mean this book is billed as a YA book for crying out loud!! There's no way a publisher would allow an author to tell a story so dark and disturbing and leave it at that. It would be too stressful and depressing. There were some great moments of levity and kindness and compassion in the book as well. They made up a small portion of the story but were interspersed enough that you felt like you could continue listening. They were a ray of light and hope in a dark, hell scape. The novel is about a very nice, basically good boy who at the age of 13 stabbed his abusive father who frankly deserved it. His father was a truly horrible, evil person. William Sheppard gets sent to a ranch in Colorado which breaks wild horses and is also a reformatory jail-type setting for teen boys. So the novel goes from one about pretty horrible child and wife abuse to one that is about utterly horrifying abuse between prison guards and boys and boys against boys. It is brutal. It is nightmarish. It is like nothing I have ever read. But Will is lucky to find 3 other boys that become his best friends. Over the course of the story you learn about the tragic circumstances that landed each of those boys in the ranch. You love the boys. And horrible things happen to the boys. I do not want to ruin any part of the plot. I cannot exactly say that I recommend this book because this book will haunt you. It feels like mental punishment and an emotional beat-down to read this book. But in the end, there is hope, and love, and strength to overcome. It is worth it in the end. Be prepared to cry.
review 2: This book was not what I was expecting it to be. It was a short, quick read but has some brutal content. There is physical and mental torture in an almost Lord of the Flies setting. I enjoyed parts of the first half, but the second half was too traumatic for me to really enjoy. I found it hard to relate and connect to the character because the personal moments were few and far between. I would only recommend it if you are prepared to deal with a traumatizing read. less

A very hard book to rate. Well written, and the characters were well developed. Just very brutal.

This is a 4.5 stars for me, not sure what is holding me back from 5 stars.
