review 1: Interrupting Chicken is a story that takes you through a classic routine of a father putting his daughter to bed with a story, there is just one thing, this chicken always interrupts the classic tales being read to her to tell the characters in the story different lessons so that they are not put in danger or bad situations. The interrupting chicken eventually tells a story to her father that helps him fall fast asleep.Stein provides cartoon like drawings with vibrant colors to capture the readers attention. He also makes a hero out of the interrupting chicken by having her give good advice to the characters in the stories her father is reading to make them safe, short, and sweet. There is use of repetition and a chronological story line. It feels like the illustration... mores use an enhancing interaction to the words. With the use of red in the illustrations it provides the reader with a more energetic and passionate feel while reading the book.
review 2: Little Red Chicken is getting ready for bed, she puts on her pajamas and asks Papa to read her a bed time story “Alright said Papa. I’ll read you one of your favorites. And of course you are not going to interrupt the story tonight are you?” she agrees to “be good” and not interrupt the story this time. Papa begins with the classic tale of Hansel and Gretel but right after they accept an old woman’s invitation to enter her candy house, little red chicken jumps into the story! She reveals that the old woman is an evil witch and sends Hansel and Gretel on a safer path then, the story abruptly ends. Papa reminds little red chicken to not interrupt, she promises not to if they read just one more story. But no matter what story Papa reads, little chicken continues to interrupt by adding her own ending to these familiar fairy tales. She then decides to write her own story that will help put her Papa to sleep. This is a wonderful modern picture book, its creative illustrations and humorous story plot make it a very enjoyable book to read. I really like that the author used humor to convey important lessons that children have learned through fairy tales such as; “don’t talk to strangers!” in a more entertaining way, humor is always a beneficial way to capture people’s attention and to get a message across. Once you read the title and the cover you know it is going to be a fun book. The author uses lively vocabulary that keeps children interested but is easy to understand. The story also has a good flow that makes it a great read aloud. Another reason why this book is so engaging is because the story changes so frequently in a silly and visually appealing way, which is perfect for children because they have a short attention span also, it is a situation they have most likely experienced which makes it very relatable. The illustrations do a great job of reinforcing the theme, the way the perspective of the story changes from Papa and little red chicken to the stories in the book I really like that you got a first person point of view of the books. What I especially liked was the different types of illustrations throughout the story and the way little red chicken stands out from the rest of the pastel colored characters this interrupts the stories visually as well, I think this is a very creative way to illustrate the meaning of interrupting In conclusion this is an entertaining and imaginative story with a unique structure; different illustrative styles, colorful and detailed drawings, engaging change of perspective and humorous text all of these things make for a highly entertaining picture book. This is certainly a book children will enjoy, there is no doubt that this book deserved the Caldecott award. less
