review 1: Another winner by Liss. I picked this one up on a whim when I saw who the author was and the name Benjamin Weaver in the dust jacket. This isn't a Weaver story though - he's only barely in it. But it's still a quality read. One that would actually make a decent bookclub read since it spends a fair amount of time on the notion of atonement/forgiveness/justice/revenge and all those twisted-up notions. Im also happy to report that this book did *not* rush the ending, as has been so common with other books Ive read recently. We begin the wrap up with more than 100 pages to go - there's plenty of time for things to play out and wrap up. Are all questions answered? Of course not, but I still felt wholly satisfied at the last.Had to Google a few times - I admit to knowing ... morevery little about the Portuguese Inquisition, or New/Old Christians. I like a historical fiction that drops a little knowledge on ya.....
review 2: Lisbon, 1745. The inquisition is still persecuting New Christians whose families had converted from Judaism generations before. Sebastiao's father has made plan to get the family out but Is taken before he could. Only Sebastiao escapes to London. 10 years later her returns to Lisbon as a British merchant seeking revenge against the inquisition and the priest who killed his parents. He meets old friends most of who do it recognize him and begins his scheme only to learn that the deceptions and betrayals are more convoluted than he imagined. He is guided by the phrase from the Day of Atonement that God cannot forgive until men forgive one another. Another captivating novel by this author less

Interesting historical perspective on Portuguese inquisition; a bit heavy on the swashbuckling.
