review 1: I enjoyed this thriller by David Rosenfelt. The story line has to do with the police chief of a small town in Maine whose past has caught up with him from the time he served in Afghanistan and was lauded as a war hero because of all the lives he saved when an IED exploded killing most of the troops riding in a jeep, along with an American journalist and other civilians. The incident happened about five years before the events in this story take place. If there is a lesson to be learned from this story, it is that "he who seeks revenge should dig two graves", as the Chinese proverb goes. I thought the story was a good one and it kept my attention on it until I finished the book.

In addition to the dozen original historical items within it, there's an extra item; a container with ten cryptic messages about planned murders, four of which have occurred already. One is the murder of the police chief's wife. Another is the murder in prison of her convicted murderer. So were both killed by a third party, who killed two others and plans to kill another six? (The body count is worse than the four messages promised, because one crime killed eleven people.) How the plocice chief, a former Afghan war hero, finds out the responsible party and the operational motive makes for a good plot. The characterization doesnn't quite match the plotting, though. The prose is serviceable and the characters aren't fleshed out very much beyond the central character, and even that is a bit thin. Still, it's a quick read, and not at all unpleasant, save for one repeated bit of stupidity on the part of the small-town cop. less

It was okay. Good plot. Some distracting grammar errors. Read all his novels and will continue.
