review 1: I actually enjoyed this more than some of Sedaris's non-fiction essays. It was a very quick and entertaining read. To say I "couldn't put it down" would not be truthful (short essays make for many breaks in reading, at least for me), but I found myself reaching for this first every time I looked at my kindle library. And let's face it, I always suspected that cute animals were little assholes, so the subject matter was right up my alley.
review 2: I listened to this book while walking to errands and enjoyed it much less than I expected. I usually enjoy David Sedaris, but I haven't read anything of his that wasn't memoir-like. Unscrupulous clever animal tricks naive, trusting animal; pompous, self-centered animal does unkind thing to other animals; self-right
... moreeous animal is justly punished and put in its place. Not so bad on the surface, but a lot of it was graphic. Eyes plucked out; captive animals with grotesque deformities; vomit-eating flies. I could do without that. less

Clever, sort of disturbing stories but I think I'll stick with Sedaris's family stories instead.

Cute stories giving animals human qualities and placing them in very human situations.
