review 1: Een absoluut hoogtepunt in literaire geschiedschrijving. De auteur heeft zijn ooggetuigen en gesprekspartners genomen om als medium te dienen voor een geschiedschrijving vanuit de onderbuik van een land dat ons zo na aan het hart ligt en toch zo veraf lijkt.Mijn algemene kijk op de Belgische aanwezigheid in onze kolonie is niet substantieel veranderd, maar wel gematigder over deelaspecten. En vooral voor de Britten: Gnoothi seauton!!!! Zou het beter geweest zijn zonder de Belgen? Absoluut! Zou het beter zijn geweest met nog enkele jaren België na 1960? Evenzeer!Het Congo van vandaag bewijst dat daar ten gronde niks is veranderd.De cultuurantropologische les: deel nooit een bevolking op in groepen die niet zelf een culturele identiteit zochten.....Absoluut te l... moreezen!
review 2: An easily readable book of Congo. Most people even only marginally familiar with the Congo (perhaps through the Heart of Darkness) will remember chopped hands, excessive exploitation, and colonialism without a hint of ambiguity. Its all here but Van Reybrouck attempts to go beyond and construct a social history of the Congo using a multitude of sources including oral interviews. The result is a far more nuanced look at what happened in the Congo. One can be annoyed as moves from the big political/historic picture to the mere anedotal and back but one can still appreciate the storytelling that emerges. A thematic picture emerges in which nation building and tribalism sway back and forth, a trinity of interest -- corporate, spiritual and government -- continue to reemerge in different forms, foreign exploitation, neopotism, etc are all given their due. The vastness of not only the country but of his sources and history give rise to one simple problem a missing chart of characters in which a reader can keep track. less
