review 1: Veel bijgeleerd, helaas alweer veek vergeten, al ligt dat eerder aan mezelf. Van Reybrouck biedt een persoonlijke doch open kijk op de Congolese geschiedenis. Anderen noemen het pseudo-intellectueel (Draulans in Knack) of haast revisionistisch (Note op dewereldmorgen.be), maar op mij komt het eerder over als een schrijver die meerdere stemmen en visies aal bod wil laten komen zonder een partij volledig de zwartepiet in handen te schuiven. Van Reybrouck mengt geschiedenis met anekdotes over hoe hij zijn getuigen ontmoette. Deze settings en beschrijvingen zijn vaak verhelderend, maar bij sommige getuigenissen (zoals die van de 126-jarige Nsaki of de neppe sabeldief) komt het eerder over als naïef en sentimenteel. Kuifje in Kongo, zoiets. Feiten worden concreet gemaakt door ... morecijfers te vertalen naar hun impact op het echte leven. Als je weet dat een Congolees x aantal dagen moet werken voor een maaltijd, spreekt dat meer dan een inflatie-cijfer. Ook anekdotes verluchten het geheel en maken bepaalde gebeurtenissen tastbaarder. Ander positief punt: de vooruitblik op de relaties met China. Tot slot schrift Van Reybrouck scherp en snedig, gebald en beeldend. Jammer dat er geen kort historisch overzicht bij het boek zit. Mijn gatenkaasgeheugen zou er baat bij hebben.
review 2: This magisterial history of Congo keeps the readers interest in a country which may not be of immediate interest to readers. The history of Congo goes back 90,000 years when the first evidence of human habitation of the area is well documented. Congo's prehistory is not static like other places there is an arc of development from hunter gathering existence to agriculture and iron working but the pace of change really picks up in the 1870s with the arrival of europeans into the interior of central Africa. Livingstone and Stanley entering the congo in 1875 and the making of congo as a personal possession of Leopold of Belgium. The hunt for rubber by Leopold is well documented in King Leopold's Ghost and the massacres of congo peoples for this greed. The story continues with the Belgian Government taking control in 1908 and the colonial period from then until 1960. the movement for independence the rivalry between Lumumba and Mobutu and the murder of Lumumba with CIA help. The Kleptocracy of Mobutu through the nineties is well documented and the stuggle for democracy in the 1990s. Then from 1997 to 2002 the "great war of Africa" took place. Roughly at the same time as the Iraq war it garnered little media attention but has killed the most people of any war since WWII. The story ends in the present as this shattered country tries to pick up the peices and put together a democracy in the ruins. Very well written and translated. less
