review 1: When I picked up this book at the library I had no idea of what I was about to experience. It took me off guard because Galen's life resonated with mine at first. He is a fanatic of spiritual schools of belief and he spends his time thinking about how his perceived reality is there to provide him with meaning to get detached from its new reincarnation. He barely eats and he is completely self absorbed in his own struggles. He doesn't understand his mother, and he has negative feelings towards her because of it. However, he is not entirely responsible for this kind of attitude. It's quite clear from the beginning the his mom doesn't want him to leave her and she is using him as a substitute for a husband. That introduces to many layers of frustrations, the one Galen feels t... moreowards her and the one she feels towards her father because of which all her family is affected. So she is also victim of fate, and it's all a chain reaction, of which Galen is somehow aware just at the end, when he decides to close the circle. I loved this intricate web of psychologically traumatic relationships between the characters. It just showed how the mistakes of parents affect many generations onwards, and some more than others. Nobody could have expected what came at the end of the book, and that's real life, unexpected choices and unexpected outcomes. Some people are better than others at imagining those outcomes and are more prone to be affected by anxiety, however not even that is enough to keep someone safe from the fear of failing to be true to his own expectations.

Dark, dark, dark. A departure from the equally depressing, but less sordid previous efforts.

Riveting until about 3/4 through then a little boring.
