review 1: I've been ignoring my literary reading in favour of quick&dirty detectives and farmville lately... This book (although I'm only a third into it) has made me realize why reading is bliss. Wow. Update: Finished it. Weird, stunning, moving and very very harsh. This story of a boy coming to terms with his father's suicide is probably one of the most cruel tales of revenge I've ever read. I loved it.
review 2: A young boy Roy trying to come to terms with his father's (Jim) unfaithfulness and suicide while also trying to get to 'know' his father, is told in 6 narratives. Set in Alaska, the descriptions are wild and beautiful but with much disturbing and visceral imagery. A kind of 'coming of age' narrative, but not always in Roy's voice or even perspective. I expec
... moreted to be empathetic and moved by Roy's story but I only felt this on rare occasions. Much is autobiographical and I found it a tad self-indulgent. less
