review 1: 1.75 star. Interesting idea, but this sometimes read more like the description of a book rather than the book itself. Most of the story is conveyed by the author telling us what happened and what people thought or felt instead of letting us see/feel what was going on through the characters' experiences. This type of storytelling makes it harder to get invested in the characters (and since I couldn't get invested in the characters, I didn't make it all the way to the end of the book). Also needs a run-through for formatting issues and grammatical errors.
review 2: This book was iffy for me (meaning should I give 3 or 4 stars) and I say that because it hard to base a series on 12 chapters (over 100 kindle pages). A good start I think, I'm hoping the next book wil
... morel really have some oomph to it and this one was just the buildup. It's definitely YA and I think that's part of my issue with the story. I have to take teen angst in small doses and yes I knew it was before I bought the book. I just can't resist giving African American authors who are trying to break into paranormal books a chance. But little factor didn't take away from the book. I just think he didn't really get to dig his pen into the meat of his story.I've read Bankroll Squad by Weaver (and have a couple more books of his sitting on my kindle to be read) and it was good. I do believe he will work some magic on the next one because it was starting to get good when it ended. And since the book picked up for me at the tail end, I gave it 3 stars. Not a bad start into a new genre. And things can't be too boring if some vampires stick around in Cedar Hill lol. I do like the spin on the powers of the vampires they don't have the normal vampire weakness. It also was smidge Twilightish and a couple of things gave me Bella and Edward flashback but its original enough with the other twists. I won't go into the synopsis because what's listed is the gist of the story. Was it enough to make me read the next one? Sure, I have to know what happens to Marvin and if Marvin's Mom will go ballistic on these vampires. Also, I want to see what repercussions Bristol will face and Marvin because that little thing called loved has dragged him into a huge mess. less
