review 1: I had to read this for the OPL book club. It's about a wild-child, rich flapper who is sent to live in Africa while her most recent scandalous behavior blows over in the press. In some respects it was interesting to read about Colonial Nairobi, but that was about the only redeeming quality of the book, in my opinion. I found I couldn't like the main character, and really just wanted to give her a swift kick in the rear! She did what she wanted all the time, despite social constraints. I suppose this made her a strong feminist character, but in truth she came off as heartless and selfish. And so much sex--even the lion sex she observed while on a safari was described. I mean, that's just overkill, imho.
review 2: 3.75 Stars. Different from Deanna Raybourn's Lady
... more Julia series. I enjoyed the unbridled sexual independence of Delilah with an attitude to match. As usual I was enthralled with Raybourn's ability to describe the setting so beautifully. Clearly she has an affinity for Africa which played a major character in the book. The story did not seem to drag on like I felt in her other writings. Yes Delilah seemed condescendingly preachy and the African's all seem to take on the same stereotypical role of powerless wizened soothsayers who are unappreciated by those from more developed countries. Its the kind of thing I tried not to think very hard about as I read the story. Delilah's transformation was not very remarkable. Outside of her role as harlot with the heart of gold turned great white savior after she saw a reflection of what she would become in the people around her. It reminds me of the time I lived overseas and friendships I had were born from necessity rather than likability. This book makes me want to read other descriptive stories set in Africa. Oh and Ryder, he has the swagger of every alpha male hero I grew up watching on TV or in the movies, Han Solo, Indiana Jones, Jack Bauer, Captain Kirk, Lethal Weapon, Terminator, etc. You cannot help but to fall for him and root for these two to get together. less

I really can't decide between a five and four star rating. It's a good book but it has it's flaws.
