review 1: Of the three novellas, I tolerated the first, really loved the second and mostly loved the third. Debbie Macomber's "The Twenty-First Wish" had some cute moments and a lovely storyline between an older woman, Anne Marie, with responsibilities (including a somewhat annoyingly precocious adopted daughter) and the man to whom she's attracted, but it blew too hot and cold for me with the other guy, Mel, as an over-the-top complication that was all-too-easily resolved."Coming Unraveled", on the other hand, had a heroine who'd been eating a lot of humble pie trying to make it in New York before returning home to help her grandmother recover from knee surgery. Robyn also runs into T.J., a taciturn fellow who's part of the knitting circle at her grandmother's store. T.J. is very p... morerotective of her grandmother and the other ladies - typical misunderstandings about Robyn's time away and intentions once home fuel their conflicts that turn into connection. Robyn is a breath of fresh air in many ways - she admits she's made mistakes, she's worked hard to deal with them and move forward. Only T.J. sometimes annoys!Lastly, "Return to Summer Island" was a wonderful, sometimes bittersweet story that followed Caro's slow recovery from injury, trying to take up her beloved hobby again, while also making connections with Gage, a marine on the verge of deploying back to Afghanistan. Some of that moved much too quickly but she ends up looking after his pets. There's a much-too-magical HEA at the end that really blew the credibility scale but, otherwise, some lovely writing.
review 2: Since I knit I have been become the recipient of books with knitting themes. This book is a novella with three stories by different authors, each telling their story set against a knitting back drop. The first by Debbie Macmber has a mother and adopted daughter learning to knit as part of their 20 item wish list. To add a twist the daughter's birth father shows up ... The second is a would be Broadway star returning home to help run her grandmother's knit store while the grandmother has and recouperates from surgery. Broadway didn't work out and she is now looking for another profession. Her plan is that once grandma recovers she will get a job and attend the local community college. Needless to say knitting becomes the way, complete with a romance and a happy ending. The third and last story is of a knitter who was in a devastating car accident from which she is going through a long, protracted recovery. Her beloved knitting is no longer her solace, as the injury to her hand prevents it. As she struggles with PT and to knit again, she meets a soldier who is returning to Afghanistan and a long distance correspondence ensues complete with her caring for his animals – Bogart and Bacall (gotta love those names). Of course a happy ending, with Caro slowly being able to knit again - though attaining her former proficiency is still a work in progress. All three were enjoyable, fast reading with well-defined characters. less
