review 1: Finally! I've been persevering with this book through a many long night at bingo. Some of the short stories are really really good. Some are less so and what was really clear was Eisenberg's reliance on some familiar story settings (eg, Mexico/Central America) which made the book a bit of a hard slog to get through. Its like when you hear an artist's best of cd and being so impressed you rush out, get the discography and realize that the best of was enough? I'd recommend getting one, maybe two of her short story collections rather than this large collection.
review 2: I am deeply ashamed to admit that I did not love these stories. I so desperately wanted to love these stories! She was my husband's beloved professor, the literary gem of Charlottesville (unt
... moreil New York and the Genius grant whisked her away). But these stories... I could not find these people in real life. Their reactions to everything seemed so pale, so unbelievable, so un-human. Maybe I am all wrong; I hope I am. I hope I will return to her one day and come away with a different perspective. less
