My Thoughts –
I won a copy of this book at an Allen & Unwin event this year. If it wasn’t for winning the door prize, I would not have ever know this book existed.
The story is about a girl whose father is dying. The same girl is finding it hard letting go of her best friend Julian who is moving to go to the school of his dreams. She is also finding it hard to be herself in a world that seems to be ending sooner rather than later.
There isn’t much about this book that I liked. In fact, I didn’t really like it at all. It was a struggle to read from the very beginning. It was hard to read the clunky writing style and hard to wrap my head around a girl who would rather bash her own head in until she puked and knuckles were bleeding than except the fact that her father is dying, when he has been sick most of her life.
The premise of the book is a bit of a stretch and there is muddle of characters in the book that are either too mean or hippy to be real enough to think that they could exist in the same book.
The whole thing is a bit of a mess which needs a trigger warning sticker on the front, even though I don’t believe in those, as some of the anxiety and OCD the main character is dealing with is written in a very confrontation way, that isn’t great to read about.
Have a go at reading it, but be warned, it is slow, hard to read and full of things you don’t necessarily want to be reading in a young adult book.
