review 1: Set in Iran during 1988, this book will remind readers of Nancy Garden's ground-breaking Annie on My Mind and Sara Farizan's If You Could Be Mine in many respects. Fifteen-year-old Farrin lives in a house full of secrets. Her parents, especially her mother, are deeply involved in a movement to return the Shah's family to power. When a new girl enters her class, Farrin is drawn to Sadira's intelligence, wit, and personality. The girls fall deeply in love and take risks that result in both of them being grounded and eventually arrested. Since homosexuality is considered deviant behavior in Iran, the girls are sure to be executed unless Farrin's parents can manage to smuggle her out of prison. Readers will be caught up in this engaging story even while their hearts break at t... morehe story's conclusion. The fact that more than 70 countries consider being gay or lesbian to be a crime adds to the story's poignancy and horror. As I reached the last page, I sighed at what might have been for the two girls and shook my head in amazement that this fictional account is based on a true experience. As always, Ellis writes books that make readers think.
review 2: I think Ellis has tackled a tough topic here - same sex relationships in Iran - with real integrity, grace and passion - it is a powerful novel that I think offers no easy answers in terms of dealing with prejudice aimed at GLTBQ people in so many countries around the world - at first I wondered why Ellis had chosen to set the novel in 1988 but it makes sense - Iran's appalling human rights record is nothing new - it's decades old and that's an issue that we have to grapple with - Ellis doesn't offer us a fairy tale ending either and I admired the book for the truths it tells less

I very nearly cried at the end. The sad thing is that this still happens in a lot of places.

The ending was a bit rushed but otherwise it's a great children's book.
