review 1: in this fourth book in the series, Jess and team are tracking down the killer of a cop's wife. The woman was decapitated in an attempt to mimic recent gang violence in Birmingham, but that does not fool Jess. This was personal. The case is complicated by the fact that the only possible witness is an auttistic child, who thinks the killer was an angel. This series is just so good. I really feel like I know these folks. Jess was not wound quite so tight in this one as she becomes more comfortable in her new job. She is also learning that relying on others for some things is not a sign of weakness. I like the growing relationships in the story. The mystery in this one is pretty good and there is the continuing hunt for a serial killer. Looking forward to the next... more one.
review 2: Great book just like the previous ones. Each page brings something different and makes you want to read faster to find out what happens next. Must say, I did not see it coming as to who the killer was of a cops wife. But as the story progressed, and when the person suspected was questioned, you got the feeling that something was just not right. And then when the little autistic boy from next door gets kidnapped because he inadvertently may have seen the killer, you hoped they would find him soon. I liked how the romance between Harris and Burnett is there, but does not take the lead away from the story like so many other authors will do. It leaves you with just enough to make you think they may end up together at some point, especially now that her ex husband has gone back to LA. I really like how strong minded Harris's character is. She doesn't back down from anything, not even when she knows her life has been threatened. But, when she contacts the contact person that helped her before when his daughter was missing, she learned that everything has been taken care of-the mole in the dept has been dealt with and she is no longer a target. Makes you wonder if it was possible the cop that had a hand in with the killing of his partners wife. Don't want to give many spoilers. But there is also the question of her new landlord. Out of nowhere, he goes to Harris's sister-Lily, and tells her he has a garage apt that is available. She takes the apt, but she wonders herself about him. Little things that he does, only comes out at night when it is cooler, fixes things for her without her asking, and even drags out a glider for her to use on the patio. When he ran through the data base, nothing comes out that is abnormal to be concerned about. But it feels like there is more to him that anyone knows. Now, I can read number 5 of this series-the one that I have won off the Goodreads site. I must say, I have not been disappointed by these books and will reluctantly have to wait until number 6 comes out to find out how it all ends. That will be the hardest part. Great job Ms. Webb. less
