review 1: You can tell in his book what Chopra believes in compared to other faiths in the world. Chopra picked out 10 saints or people he thought portrayed his idea of God and reflected on one piece he pulled out of these people's lives. As we will find with all books on life, they are interpretations from a person about how they think they have encountered Christ. Even though the people Chopra picked out preached humility and togetherness, Chopra chooses certain situations of people of certain faiths and hones in on particular moments in their life that sort of sums up the faith those saints believe in. The trouble is, Chopra is antagonistic towards the faiths that go against what Chopra believes in(I can only guess it is Buddhism morphed a little). I can tell Chopra does not have ... morea lot of love for Catholics and shows that in the tales that are chosen to portray that religion. Instead of uniting us all in the search of God, Chopra is merely providing his opinion of what he has found so far. The book should be called 'Chopra's idea of God'.His reflections boarder on preaching rather than offering ideas. Opinions that try to pack religions into limited boxes that related to 20 page summaries of one person's moment who says they believe in a certain faith. I am trying to portray that the search for God lies in such a bigger picture than what you can find summing up religions in a moment of a person's life and what they said or believed in. His summary should have taken up more of that book at the end than the reflections and the summaries of the people.I do thank Chopra for introducing me to Shankara and Julian of Norwich. Chopra helped strengthen my love of Catholicism after reading more about Shankara and Hinduism. I was also very intrigued about the entire writings and belief of Julian of Norwich that I plan on looking at more.If you are wanting this book to give you a direct path or answers on ideas that Chopra found about God, I think you are approaching this book wrong. If you take this book as a start of your own personal journey of God and a great starting point of many faiths in which you plan on researching further, then by all means, this book is for you.
review 2: The concept of the book had so much potential and initially drew me in, but ultimately, I did not think the book lived up to its promise overall. The first three chapters focusing on Job, St. Paul and Socrates composed a strong opening with their compelling narratives and insightful commentary. However, from the fourth chapter on, I found the narratives less clear and compelling, and the commentary less insightful as a whole. I looked forward to the chapter on Ann Hutchinson and learning more about her experience of and with God, but I thought the narrative lacked a fully developed picture of her experience. While the final chapter and epilogue were very informative and almost brought my rating back to a solid three stars, the book itself just seemed uneven in its power and content. less
