The Rumor
review 1: What a great start this book was to a new series set in the 1830's New York. What really set this book apart from the genre is that it doesn't take place in the beautiful drawing rooms and glittering ballrooms of the day instead it takes place in the slums of the Five Points area of New York. Of course there is still a duke thrown in there, but it's really about a regular girl trying to survive in a hostile environment. Georgia meets an incredibly attractive man on the street then watches in horror as he is run down by a carriage while trying to catch the boy who stole her purse. After a lengthy stay in the hospital he is released into Georgia's care where she finds out the accident caused a bit of memory loss. What follows is a love story full of heat and caring that... more goes beyond the slums into the realm of the aristocracy of London. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next book in the series which is Matthew's.
review 2: A delightful historical romance set predominantly in New York's less desirable neighborhoods and featuring a plucky Irish lady who was widowed soon after her marriage and who has been working her fingers to the bone to keep body and soul together. Her encounter with Roderick, heir to the Duke of Wentworth on the streets of New York City became complicated and by the time everything had transpired, Roderick had lost his memory and after several days being hospitalized, was taken home by the outspoken widow where they spent several days together--certainly not in a hot love affair, by any means, but just trying to find a way he could be accepted. After all, he wasBritish, and those Brits historically have been the enemies of every true Irishman. It is a story about a serious culture clash between 19th century America and England, but it is also a look into the almost never-to-be-breached class divide between Lord Roderick and the outspoken American widow. Yet where there is a will there is a way. I think the first part of the book was exceptional, but I have the feeling that the resolution was rushed and yet, that may say more about me than about the book itself. All in all, it was a wonderful read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed the part of the novel that brought Roderick's ducal father together with his Irish widow. As the duke commented: "Boy they are going to really love her in London!" (I'm not sure that is a direct quote, but more as I remember it.) A book well-worth the time and effort to read. less
