review 1: SynopsisLady Justine is getting married weeks before her father is released from prison to Radcliff Morton. With disapproval of seeing her fiancee before the wedding, Lady Justine arrives on Radcliff’s footsteps. She soons finds out that the bench as increased fines up to fifty-thousand pounds for her father’s release from prosied. Since he is still held at Marshalsea, he can’t be released for another 8 weeks.After her father’s release, Carlton’s mistress Lady Matilda pays Radcliff a visit. She had been mistreated by Carlton and is lookign for a new place to stay. Pregnant with carlton’s child, Radcliff doesn’t want her in his home. He does not want to ruin his reputation of hsi family by aiding Matilda. He would eather have her stay at the brothel where she ... morewas giving Carlton services. Lady Justine has a bigger heart and convinces Radcliff to let her stay for her sake. Little did Lady Justine know, Matilda has other plans and finds women attractive. He had a past history with Lady Matilda that he is trying to overcome.Lord Winfield- Radcliff’s solicitor in Lord Marwoods case.Carlton- Radcliff’s brother, they don’t get along due to his appearance in London’s brothels.Matilda Thurlow- The mistress of Carlton and is carrying his baby. Later she decides that Carlton is not the best man for her and their child.Lady Marwood- Lady Justine’s mother.Lord Marwood- Lady Justine’s father, he served time in prision for his writings about animals in relation to humans in Africa.Henri- Lady Justine’s french servant hired by Radcliff. She has no woman maids because Radcliff doesn’t find it necessary.SettingThis story takes place in England during the year of 1829. These types of period novels that are old English and Victorian are one of my favorite types of books to read. Delilah Marvelle describes the town, estates, gowns the women waear and the streets of London very well as to what we imagine them to be in that time period. These characters are descibed so welladn fit into the setting with attire it makes you feel like you’re living in the story or are watching it on the big screen.My ReviewI have read this book before a couple years ago and I fell in love. I continued to read the rest of the series and knew that this was one author that was going to be my new favorites. Her character development is what makes this book so well developed, you learn about these characters and family dynamics. Every reader has a family member that is not well accepted, shy or known as the rebel. Delilah takes these characters and turns them into people that we all know in our lives. Character conversations on how they argue or even make love are rather true in the way I express feelings towards my family and friends. I must admit that she goes so far into detail that you get distracted at the fact that you’re reading. Time flys by so fast because you get so involved in her books. This is not your typical love story where both main characters fall in love. There are arguements between the characters and harsh family dynamics, it makes the story even more interesting because the reader does not expect what the ending will be. My only critism for this book is that the chapters are rather long. I didn’t know when the chapters would end and if I could end it on time.My Rating: 4.6
review 2: Una novela extraña, con personajes singulares y situaciones poco habituales en una narración de este tipo.Vale, él, duque de Bradford, es un libertino y está asqueado de sí mismo. Pero creo que ahí termina el cliché masculino. Es un personaje complicado que va dando tumbos, perdido, sin saber realmente lo que desea de la vida. Está vacío, hueco por dentro, ansía ser salvado pero no cree ser merecedor de ello. Totalmente imperfecto, mete la pata constantemente en su relación con su flamante nueva esposa, Justine.Justine está perdidamente enamorada de él. O eso cree. Aunque la verdad es que está enamorada de la imagen que tiene del duque, de las pocas veces que se han visto.Es una mujer extraña, diferente, debido a que se ha criado en áfrica, muy lejos de la rígida sociedad londinense. Es franca, honesta, arrojada; nada ni nadie puede echarle el freno. Ni siquiera Bradford.La forma en que empieza la novela es absolutamente original y nos da una muestra bastante clara de lo que podremos encontrar más allá de las primeras páginas. Un vaivén de sentimientos encontrados, de decisiones precipitadas que pueden llevar al caos mas absoluto en una relación entre dos personas que nada tienen en común.Personajes masculinos mentalmente torturados y físicamente marcados hay muchos, pero este Bradford me ha llegado al alma. ¿Por qué? No lo sé, sinceramente. Quizá la forma en que la autora dirige a sus personajes hacen que parezcan mas humanos y menos de cartón piedra. Puede que sea el hecho que ninguno de los dos sean convencionales.La mezcla entre inocencia y madurez intelectual de Justine, justamente equilibradas, hacen de ella un personaje femenino a la altura de Bradford, tan absolutamente retorcido y hundido en su miseria amoral, el contrapunto perfecto entre ambas cualidades, buenas y malas.Absolutamente imperfectos, Bradford y Justin navegarán por un mar de incertidumbres y malas decisiones y nos arrastrarán en su barco que esta constantemente amenazando con hundirse. La cuestión es si su amor no confesado, sobrevivirá al naufragio. less
