review 1: Andrew has inherited his grandfather's estate, including 2 crotchety servants--a maid and a gardener--and a mysterious "field of care" that he knows nothing about. At least his grandfather taught him a bit of magic in all those summers he spent at the house. He's getting along okay, and actually quite enjoying the battle of wills with his servants, when Aidan Cain comes into his life. Aidan comes seeking refuge from sinister beings that have been stalking him ever since his gran died, and incidentally, seeking the former sorcerer of Melstone House. Fortunately, Andrew also has magic (if he can figure out how to use it), and most importantly, for the first time since his gran died, Aidan feels safe. More and more characters start to drift in toward the estate, almost as if... more pulled there, and before Andrew really has a handle on any of it, he's in the midst of an old battle for territory. A battle he can't afford to lose.Jones' rich characters and deceptively simple worlds make for entertaining reading. My favorite parts of the whole book were Andrew's exchanges with the servants.
review 2: This was a fantastic fantasy from the lovely author, Diana Wynne Jones. I was captivated by the storyline and the world of the book, in which magic abilities are treated as normal as someone having a pet dog. I can't believe it took me this long to read something by this author, and I am definitely getting on the hunt for Howl's Moving Castle next! My only sadness is that there isn't more to this series, but that just leaves more room for the imagination to fill in those delicious gaps! Definitely a must-read. less
