review 1: I listened to the audio book. This was a fun, delightful story that wove in some of my favorite fairy characters in new and interesting ways. I really enjoyed the how Jones pulled everything together, and despite a few moments of thinking it was going to go too far over the edge (I have issues with characters who get TOO spiteful and horrid), she kept it from tumbling into dismay. This is one I'd love to read to my kids someday, if I ever have any. In the meantime, read it to yours (if you have them) or encourage them to read it!
review 2: I enjoyed it. It was a little slow at first and in a few other places, but there was enough mystery going on to make me want to read onwards regardless. The characters are likeable even if they don't stand out much, and the
... more way magic seems to work is interesting. The only thing I was really disappointed in was the ending. It was okay I guess, but I felt like it was lacking something. Nevertheless, it was a fun ride and I do recommend it to people who like this stuff. less

I'd probably give it closer to three stars, but I love her distinct tone and I am sad when I think about how she'll never write any more books. The pacing is a bit uneven, and I'm still a bit fuzzy on the details of the system of magic/the whole deal with the glass and the doppelgangers. Similar to her other books, the sense of place plays a bit part of it (like Chrestomanci's castle).
