review 1: I liked this one better than the first one, I got my tears out the way right at the beginning. I have always thought of the Duke of Norfolk as an evil old goat who hurt and murdered almost all of his family but the author managed to make him at one hand evil but on the other a creature of who evokes sympathy in the readers because you can pity him, I am glad Duchess Elizabeth survives but the one I grieve for will always be Mary.
review 2: Initially I didn't plan to read this book because of the Mills&Boon style cover and the romancey description - I'm glad I changed my mind because, fortunately, neither accurately represents this story. ... moreok gave me a very different view of Thomas Howard, not necessarily a sympathetic one, but certainly a far more complex picture than the usual portrayal of a ruthless aging courtier who used two of his nieces as pawns for his ambitious plans. I liked the author's interpretation of the main characters and their motivations and the story held my attention from beginning to end. I do take points off though for the absence of an author's note. less
