review 1: As a fan of Trevanian's Shibumi, I naturally desired to learn more about Nicholai Hel, the novel's accomplished super assassin. I read Shibumi once back in the early eighties and enjoyed it very much. The book left a lasting impression. When I discovered that Don Winslow had written a prequel, I knew that I had to stop what I was doing and read Satori. Winslow is certainly no Travanian, but Satori stands well enough on its own merit. There is certainly plenty of action, and suspense to keep the reader hooked. I feel like Winslow has set the stage for follow-up Nicholai Hel novels. At least I hope he does.
review 2: Basically this was a book I got off a random table, set up to sell books for cheap. It was a war book set in 1951 and had something to do with CIA.
... moreThose were the key factors that got me intrigued. I actually liked the GO game reference. I am not well verse in History but some information in the book has gotten me into some research. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and would like to read the novel it was based on, Trevanian's Shibumi. less

spooks and spies, gun-runners and grudges, a "Go" mindset against a chess mindset - excellent !

Finalmente una bella storia esotica, d'azione e di spionaggio. Lo consiglio. Bello bello.

Quite nice read, though not as good as “Shibumi”.
