review 1: If you are a classroom teacher (especially of kids aged 8-14), or a head teacher even slightly interested in literacy (and that really ought to be all head teachers), this is a book you should read. An enthusiastic arguing for doing away with classroom set texts and instead allowing the children a great deal of free choice in their reading matter. Miller includes lots and lots of practical advice, clearly explaining why she does things differently. Her tone is very can-do, up-beat and inspiring. Although the specifics of her book are set around teaching US grade 6 students (and therefore some of the detail isn't precisely relevant in settings outside the US), her proposals could easily be adapted to other school systems, even if not all her book suggestions are relevant (a... morend to be clear - that's not because they aren't good, but because they aren't necessarily available easily outside the US).If you're a parent rather than someone employed in children's education, this is still a valuable read - it will give you loads of ideas to bring to discussions with your child's (English) teacher. The only thing I wish had been done slightly better is a really clear reasoning for why "awakening the inner reader in every child" is so important. I'm convinced, but not everyone is and it would be great to have all the arguments for such an awakening marshalled in a really clear, empowering manner, with references to research, not just inspirational quotes from great writers.
review 2: The author is passionate about books so she deserves our support. It is more oriented to teachers rather than parents. It does not give too many tips or examples of inflection points in kids with no interest to interest. Just a few examples, not enought. The list of tips to nudge a kid to read could be summarize on a single page.I was expecting, more info for parents, more tips, lists of books (by age) that kids love to read with adults and lists of books (age appropriate) that kids love to read by themselves. The read-aloud book gives a little more to parents and it is also written but a book passionate. less
