review 1: Love these books - and this author.Meg has her hands full with the twins and her blacksmithing. There is currently a fair going on in the town to raise money. The former mayor got a big loan from a bank and absconded with the money and the bank is trying to foreclose on the town. Only the clerk is holed up and barricaded in city hall in the basement in his own little domain. The bank security has people positioned in the courthouse to evict him if they can. They are also trying to find out how he is getting his food and water. Mr Throckmorton has some homing pigeons that they were using, until the security company hired a man with a hawk to attack the pigeons. He was mortified when he learned they were pets and will not let the hawk go after them again. Meg and Michael ar... moree worrying that the city may take their house and land and trade to the back for the city's debt -"for the public good" - because the bank wants that land for development and a golf course. The bank is referred to by citizens as the Evil Lender - in capitals. Meg's mother's cousin Festus, an very smart attorney is working on things, and desires Mr Throckmorton to remain in the courthouse. There is an old tunnel into the courthouse under the bandstand that only a few know about. Hence the fair - besides raising money, they are making a racket so the door can be opened because it is extremely noisy to lever it open. The Shiffleys are working on getting it fixed, but until they do.....Meg's blacksmithing demonstrations, some very loud bands and choirs and other events will have to do.Of course, things get complicated - they always do - that's part of the fun. Rob spends a lot of his time in the courthouse basement with Mr Throckmorton testing out a new game he is working on for his computer game company, so his wolfhound often keeps company with the twins and Spike. Spike has instituted himself number one protector of the twins and nobody tries to get by him more than once...
review 2: Not as good as others in the series but still enjoyable. When the town is foreclosed on, the town clerk barricades himself in the basement with the records. For a year. The citizens in town help out with the siege by smuggling him necessities through an old Civil War era tunnel. Then someone is murdered and it looks like the clerk did it. Of course, he didn't but to prove it, our heroine and the other quirky characters must go through a lot of shenanigans to prove it.Oh, and the hawk comes into play because the forecloser thinks the clerk's communicating with the citizens via carrier pigeon. So he brings in a falconer with a hawk. Pigeons beware!Nice read but not quite up to Andrews' usual standards. less

Reasonable read. Not one of the more engaging Donna Andrews books though.
