review 1: I would never have picked this book up of my own volition. I finally found a book group in the small town where I now reside and this was the book for this month. I cringed a little when I found the book on Amazon because I am not a fan of what is often derisively called chick-lit. On one hand, it was pretty much what you'd expect: female bonding and (middle-age) girl-power with a side of mild family drama and mishaps that always end well. The story follows the women through their first year on the farm and although there is a healthy sprinkling of minor pitfalls, the extremely predictable "happy ending" couldn't possibly be a surprise to anyone.Yet, in spite of the rather formulaic development, it wasn't a terrible book. It was reasonably well-written, easy to read, and e... morenjoyable in the moment. It's not a book that will haunt my dreams or even cross my thoughts again after the book group discussion (and I'm struggling to figure out what there could be of substance to discuss), but it was not a chore to read and I never really got bored with it--even though nothing much really happened.
review 2: I had a terrible time finishing this book. If the long, drawn out descriptions of EVERYTHING were taken out, the book would only be 100 pages. I get that the author wants the reader to have vivid images to get a sense of place, but come on. I though there was more description of the contents in the hardware store than the actual plot. It was far fetched even for a summer read. At page 200 I jumped ahead and read a couple pages here and there. Ultimately it was returned to the library unfinished. The two stars are for the attempt to write a novel about older women overcoming their former lives' trials. I love old homes and renovations so I tried to cling to that, but I really didn't care about the characters. less
